Know what - I got to thinking (I must be hitting rock bottom), why not just put all our effort and energy behind getting Obummer reelected? Why, simple, if we need a total collapse and reset of the system I can't think of anyone that would get us there on a faster course. All the others would find some way to instill hope (God I hate that word now) for another year or two before the inevitable comes anyway. Let's just get this over with. The sooner the better.
On the other hand if he does not get reelected it will clearly be a racial event. It will be because he's black (well whatever ratio of black he is - not sure how that falls into consideration) and this nation will explode with racial tension. They have the ultimate puppet as POTUS. Divide and conquer is their MO and either way they will continue to drive a massive wedge down the center of this country to maintain their power base. Either way, trouble is coming in a big way.

Open Weekend Post 01/07-08/12
You know what to do, share the love and the knowledge. Remember this is the year of involvement on STB. Everyone needs to talk up the challenges we are facing as a nation and a planet and get the word out to as many as possible.
This weekend I will focus on a man who's opinions I have come to trust and value greatly. Read about Dr. Paul Craig Roberts (PCR) here. His experience and resume are very impressive, "President Reagan appointed Dr. Roberts Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Economic Policy and he was confirmed in office by the U.S. Senate. From 1975 to 1978, Dr. Roberts served on the congressional staff"
Dr. Roberts has a wonderful post I would like all of you to read. The Dismal Economic Outlook For The New Year - PaulCraigRoberts.org. Do you like the title? LOL, what else would I deliver, right? No, I am not sick, just a realist.

OK, so things are not adding up. Should the Lemmings be running in or is it that all the Lemmings have leaped off the cliff? "Investors pulled an estimated $132 billion from mutual funds that invest in U.S. stocks, the fifth straight year of withdrawals for domestic funds, according to preliminary data from the Investment Company Institute, a Washington-based trade group whose numbers go back to 1984. Withdrawals reached $147 billion in 2008 when the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index fell 37 percent, including dividends." U.S. Stock Funds Have Second-Worst Year - Bloomberg
Who or what is left comprising the markets these days is quite the mystery. We know the MF Global clients are out, but their money is still in (somewhere - no one seems to be able to find a billion dollars of "lost" investor funds). We know that there are trillions of QE dollars still out there. I really have no clue who or what outside of the Central Planning cabal's tentacles is in or out of this market.

Afternoon Delight 11/08/11 - Asteroid Edition
All I can say is that it is a good thing NASA does not hire FRB economists to do their math for them. Let's hope and pray this group at NASA is the only government group we can count on to do reliable math. Once decimal off on this one and it would be catastrophic. Look up in the sky. It is a bird, no it's plane, no it's Bernanke, no it is a really big rock on a near collision course with earth. I have to ask the question - What if they are lying about this as well?
"Fortunately for us, NASA predicts the murderous cosmic body will miss our planet by about 202,000 miles, passing around 6:28 p.m. on Tuesday. That's about 0.85 times the distance to the moon, NASA says. The last time an asteroid this size came this close to Earth was in 1976, and it shouldn't happen again until 2028 -- provided we're still here." Massive, unstoppable rock hurtles toward Earth - WTOP.com.

STB Morning Post 09/14/11
I can't pull it out exactly when, but I remember a period this year when the DOW minis fell over 100 points 5 out of 7 nights and wanted to crash just like the last three nights and the markets subsequently rallied out of that set up. The euro zone is driving the minis down overnight and they are rallying to "hide" the underlying weakness by the open. I'm not sure why the markets have had two green days, but they have.
I don't know how the markets can be sure of anything given the underlying issues globally and here in the US. What we have learned here at STB is that what is isn't. You can't get caught up in what "should be". The markets are totally controlled. As stated here many times the markets are all they have between them and a revolution in this country. The pension system is underfunded and on the verge of collapsing. It can not afford another "dip" in the markets as asset values give the impression (or illusion as STB likes to call it) all is well.

STB Morning Post 09/13/11
Not much to say other than China saved the day yesterday (again). It seems that you can always count on intervention of some sort to save the day (till you can't). Bottom line is they will continue to stick save till they can't. As noted on STB a few months back, it appears that the power brokers in governments around the world are tired of bailing out the banks.
The bankers have bled the system and their puppet politicians as much as possible (times two). The governmental representatives have gained nothing politically as their voter base has become increasingly dissatisfied with their performance. On the other hand, you would assume that the money flowing into their coffers from these special interests is coming in at an astounding rate. Quite the trade off, sacrifice your country and political career while you go for the big cash grab. How American!
I think they are thru throwing good money after bad. I think the politicians are actually beginning to see the light. After throwing a DISCLOSED $4 trillion at the problem (not the actual $30 trillion it took to bail out the world) and getting nothing out of it, maybe, just maybe they are growing a set large enough to take on the banks and the default issues that are coming.
I hope you all like the new look old blog. STB.com is still down and I am actually considering staying here at this point till the new blog is up and running. Comments and suggestions are always welcome. What you like and don't like I need to know so it can be incorporated into the new blog. Don't tell me after the fact, you need to tell me now.
Minis this morning have made quite the recovery (not sure who came in with the big stick (or wantons filled with dollars as sellputs put it yesterday). All it takes is a rumor to move the DOW 100 points either way in minutes. Thus, this is a dangerous playground to bring your ball to. Remember to have a trading plan for each trade and to always use stops.
Minis - yellow channel support being backtested. the blue triangle backtest is just above. 1161 (price at now) is first resistance and then 1178. Those can get run thru with the right "solution" today. Inversely 1123 is the magic number for severe downside action continuation. Bottom line is the markets are consolidating at these levels and remain range bound. Note - I adjusted the channel a bit this morning to what should be a more accurate representation of the channel capturing the last low at 1138 - where it was below the support diagonal yesterday. This is an allowable thing to do and is sometimes necessary when working with charts. STB always reviews his trendline positions and if adjustments are necessary, then I make them (and you should as well).

IsThe Writing On The Wall?
The piece by Hoenig is either total manipulation BS being spewed but the powers that be to quell the Tea Party followers or there is one person at the Fed that has a brain. Actually they all have brains, it it morals they severely lack.
Mish has praised Knocking on the Central Bank’s Door by Thomas M. Hoenig, President, Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City in his post "Three Paths Forward" - Kansas City Fed on Current U.S. Fiscal Imbalance, Hyperinflation, Printing. I guess having someone at least attempt to lay out some sort of exit strategy is nice. The only problem is he left the full frontal out of the equation.
Hoenig says, "I see just three ways forward in dealing with our current and prospective fiscal imbalances. While each involves considerable pain only the third will resolve the imbalances without eventually causing inflation to accelerate or precipitating a financial and economic crisis."
Option 1 - Monetize. "One option for dealing with a fiscal imbalance is for the central bank to succumb to political pressure and monetize the debt. ... This process often appears benign at first, but if it goes on unchecked, the outcome is almost always higher levels of inflation and ultimately a loss of confidence in the value of the currency and the economy." News flash! We're there already. With the Primary Dealers now buying huge chunks of the auctions and promptly being refunded those funds by the Fed and the recent increase in the treasurt debt ceiling limit by $1.9 T, we're there. So seeeeerike one!
Option Two - Policy Stalemate. "The second path forward is a stalemate between the fiscal and monetary authorities. In such a stalemate, the fiscal imbalance grows while an independent central bank maintains its focus on long-run price stability. ... Eventually, this combination of large debt, and high cost of borrowing and capital weakens economic growth and undermines confidence in the economy’s long run potential. Slowly, but inevitably, if the fiscal debt goes unaddressed, the currency weakens, as does access to global financial markets. And the cycle worsens, leading ultimately to a financial and economic crisis." We're already there again. The key words are "undermines confidence" and weakens economy". What's that about China pulling out (China Pulls the Plug on U.S. Treasuries)? Who bought what last year? Large debt and high cost of borrowing will lead to that $1.9 T being spent in a few months and the drug addict will be back at the door looking for another fix. As DP used to say, "And the whiff." Steeeeerike two!.
Option Three - Equitable Fiscal Discipline "Knowing inflation is not an acceptable alternative to strong fiscal management, a government faced with rising debt levels must provide a credible long-term plan to reestablish fiscal balance. The plan must be clear, have the force of law and its progress measurable so as to reassure markets and the public that the country has the will and ability to repay its debts in a stable currency." Steeeerike three! Flat footed watching a fastball down the middle! Plan? Anyone seen that plan laying around? You know the one with all those new job programs, ways to increase lending to small business and other measures to stimulate the economy while increasing regulations to ensure none of this ever happens again? Wait, not not that one, you mean the one to save the banks, funnel all of the TARP funds and increased taxes to the TBTFs? Oh, yeah, that one is right over here. They got a plan alright. One that puts us in the default line.
The Financial times picks up on Hoenig's speech in Lone voice warns of debt threat to Fed "The hawkish Kansas Fed president also warned against “dire” consequences of the central bank prolonging its holdings of mortgage-backed securities, which it purchased in an effort to prop up the US housing market. Mr Hoenig painted a picture of a slippery slope, where a less independent Federal Reserve was asked to find ways to support other ailing sectors, such as agriculture." LOL, don't forget about the Fed's balance sheet that is absolutely bloated with toxic debt and how their efforts to save the RE/CRE markets may have amounted to a big fat zero.
For those of you looking for a good debate on whether to hyperinflate ot not, here you go. And I quote, "While Donovan is correct in principle, the opportunity cost, should debt levels become insurmountable, of a devaluation will likely be actively considered by all financial "experts" in the administration. Coupled with a prevalent expectation that this kind of action, especially in light of Donovan's analysis, and coupled with a short-maturity focused debt curve, means that the likelihood of just such a policy is becoming increasingly likely."
You can chew on this as well - The Minneapolis Fed President Kocherlakota Warns Massive Debt Load Can Only Be Paid By Tax Collections Or Debt Monetization - Our options are fading fast and none of then are very appetizing. Tough times are coming.
Have a good one.

Is There Any Good News?
Trick question, it depends on if you are a bull or a bear. If you want to hear something good go back to watching CNBS or turn on CNN where you'll get some sort of sanitized feed that will keep you in the dark forever. If you want to hear me gloat in the impending doom of our democracy or hear me bash on a politician du jour, please read on.
I was going to try to string these few Zerohedge posts into a clever scentance, but could not pull it off. You 'll get the gist of what I was going to try to get across as Most Recent Insider Selling to Buying Ratio: 82:1 as Consumer Credit Contracts For 9th Straight Month, Non-Revolving Credit Increases, but since Cash is King there is no need to worry about Fried Calamari? for dinner. Wait a minute - I did make a sentence out of it. Caution, that may become some sort of new game for Shanky to play with himself. I think Marla may appreciate that (the sentence - not the playing thingy).
Mish has a good one from the most corrupt city in the USA. We all know Chcago is a really screwed up place that has produced a litany of characters that leave much to be desired (most recently our president). So what do they do to balance their budget? Chicago Cannibalization: Mayor Daley's Budget Eats 75% of a 75 Year rainy Day fund in One Year You just have to read this one to believe it. Creative financing at it's finest. And some wonder why I am such a perma bear? Cities, states, federal governments are using every available crutch right now without regard to the future consequences to solve a variety of funding issues. You talk about a recipe for disaster. The dig drop, deflation, depression is coming folks. It is just a matter of time.
Since we're dissing local governments (like shooting fish in a barrel these days) why don't we try But Wait, How About The States? from Dennninger. "Things are probably worse than most people believe," state Sen. Mike Doherty told me the other day. "It’s questionable if we’ll even be able to meet payroll in a few weeks." Oh kay, so payroll may be a problem as well as some possible bond default issues (nothing to worry about- really ;-)). Don't say they did not tell you so and don't say I did not tell you so. It is only a matter of time and the ammunition used in reflation project 2009 is empty.
naked capitalism has a must read in Newsweek: Goldman Supplied 9 Pages of Proposed Changes to Derivatives Legislation. This one is a classic, "Newsweek’s “Why is Barney Frank So Effing Mad?” is supposedly about the Congressman from Fidelity but is really about how the banksters are succeeding in neutering financial reform. One Congressional staffer has told me that everyone involved recognizes the measures don’t go far enough, but feel they can’t do much more (Congress can step out only so far ahead of the Executive, and this one clearly is in no mood to take a more aggressive stand)." You'll laugh and cry your way thru a great article that is filled with suspence (just how much of the recent legislation did GS actually write) and humor regarding the neuterization of everything in Washington. This one might actually make you scream.
The Pragmatic capitalist brings you 10 REASONS THE EQUITY RALLY IS OVER from Rosie. BUT, BUT, BUT - TPC has this to say, "In other words, we remain in a “beat and raise” world. That is unchanged for now and will ultimately be the reason why David’s 10 reasons are wrong and why the unwavering bear will be wrong again about this market top…." I'll have to go comment on this one later on TPC's site. They do great work and maybe I need some clarification to his statement. I can actually go for a little more manipulated upside, but his "improvement in corporate margins" reasoning has me a bit miffed.
So, where do you stand? Washington's Blog has 79% of Americans Want an Audit of the Fed, Only 21% are in Favor of Confirming Bernanke, and Only 20% Think Geithner is Doing a Good Job. "Trust will not be restored until Bernanke and Geithner are replaced with people whose loyalty is to the American public and small businesses, rather than the Wall Street giants, and whose track record demonstrates that they will put the American people and entire economy as a whole - rather than the big boys - first." I could not have said it better and the sooner we get these self serving bastards out of their posts the better off we will be. Oh, did you read where Kashkari is going to work? Now the Kashkari Puff Piece Makes Perfect Sense
The Big Picture has a nice post on Who Wins When the US Dollar Falls? that you should read.
That is enough for now. Yet another day without any good news (unless you want to count TPC's statement that I am ignoring). Market is very toppy now and teetering, but that is usually when the PPT/reinflation team is at their best. I am very suspicious of them letting the dollar breathe a little and then using it's powers to assist in halting any major down turns that may be imminent (note the market fell today 15min before the dollar reacted)
GL out there and happy holidays.
